When it is considered that the
significance of a certain monument transcends the national boundaries,
such a monument can be nominated for World Heritage Listing, if the
lessons to be learnt from it are of outstanding universal value.
In July 2003 The Gambia earned its first inscription on the Unesco
World Heritage List. This was a serial nomination and listing of James
Island and Related Sites. The World Heritage property consists of
seven sites along the River Gambia, namely:
