When it is considered that the significance of a certain monument transcends the national boundaries, such a monument can be nominated for World Heritage Listing, if the lessons to be learnt from it are of outstanding universal value.

In July 2003 The Gambia earned its first inscription on the Unesco World Heritage List. This was a serial nomination and listing of James Island and Related Sites. The World Heritage property consists of seven sites along the River Gambia, namely:

James Island, Lower Niumi District
Six-Gun Battery, State House, Banjul
Fort Bullen, Barra, Upper Niumi District
Ruins of San Domingo, Upper Niumi District
Remains of Portuguese Chapel, Albreda, Lower Niumi District
CFAO Building, Albreda, Lower Niumi District
Maurel Freres Building, Juffureh, Lower Niumi District

For further information and directions on any of the above sites please feel free to visit the National Museum on Banjul's Independence Drive.
