 PRIVATE MUSEUMS IN THE GAMBIA

World Heritage Sites

The two principal private museums are the Tanje Village Museum and the Kachikally Museum.

TANJI VILLAGE MUSEUM
Tanjie Village Museum is not just a museum for viewing artefacts! It also includes exhibits on the natural history and traditional culture of The Gambia presented in a captivating and accessible way to tourists, local inhabitants and Gambians.

The museum also promotes traditional craftsmanship where local artisans are allowed to have their workshops within the museums grounds. See demonstrations of their work as well as use it as an opportunity to buy souvenirs to take back home.

There is also a nature trail which is designed to be both recreational and educational.

Getting there:
Just follow the Kombo Coastal Road by taking one of the Gambian Taxis south to Tanji fishing village and the museum is around 300 metres further south of the fishing centre on the left hand side of the road.

KACHIKALLY MUSEUM & CROCODILE POOL
Kachikally Museum, in Bakau, is the home of sacred crocodiles said to aid infertility as well as aid people in their day-to-day trials and tribulations. The pool and museum is run by the Bojang family and according to legend handed down the family line the crocodiles were first brought to the pool on the instructions of Katchikally herself, the presiding spirit of the pool. Ousman Bojang, recounting how his family came to be the custodians of Katchikally recalls that his ancestor, Chomping Bojang and his family were the first people to settle in Bakau.

The crocodiles live on a diet of frogs and fish.

Getting there:
To get to the pool just go to Bakau Market on the Atlantic Road and ask for directions from there from the locals.
